Whenever I ask a prospect what their goals are, all too often their answer is, “We want to rank in the top three results for keywords A, B, and C.”

Is that really a goal? Now, I understand that high rankings (or, rather, organic search traffic) are important. I sincerely believe that a sound organic search strategy should be the core of every business’s marketing efforts.

This goes back to the old adage of running a business (location, location, location). You must be where people are actively searching for your product or service offerings.

However, imagine that you had the perfect retail location and yet your storefront was filthy. Perhaps there isn’t as much as a sign with your company’s name on the front of the building. Perhaps, once you get into the location, not a single item has a price tag and the salespeople are nowhere to be found.

That traffic coming through your parking lot isn’t going to help much, is it?

There are three basic rules that you need to follow to have a successful Web presence:

Brand matters.

Usability matters.

Search engine optimization matters.

Brand Matters

The look and feel of your Web site is a key component to success on the Web. For example, last summer, a retailer that was enjoying great rankings in the search engines approached my company about a possible redesign of their Web site.

Usability Matters

OK, let’s assume your Web site looks great now. So, if you manage to get the traffic to your site, you probably want people to fill out a lead form, call you, or buy a product.

Too often, prospects tell me that a phone call is a major point of emphasis for them, yet you can’t easily find their phone number on their page. Check some of the most successful e-commerce or lead-gen Web sites and you’ll notice that most of them display their phone number on the top right of every page. Little things like this can have a dramatic impact on your success.

Search Engine Optimization Matters
Now, just because I put SEO last on this list doesn’t mean that this is the last thing you should do. Oh no. The creation of your information architecture absolutely should be done in conjunction with your SEO efforts.
Your SEO team should research (or at least approve) the content management system and coordinate the design and site development. SEO is the foundation of your efforts.
Funny thing about how SEO and usability go hand-in-hand. Visitors to your Web site like content. They may be researching and need to read those detailed product descriptions.
And, coincidentally, search engines like that content, too. So, the more search engine friendly you make your Web site, the more usable the site will become. If your content is good enough, people might want to link to your Web site.

How bulletproof is your SEO campaign? Do you have all your bases covered? Are you getting the most organic traffic available? Smart marketers crave targeted, low-cost web traffic, especially in this challenging economy. When implemented correctly, a finely tuned SEO campaign has the ability to drive traffic efficiently, especially when compared to other forms of marketing.

However, many sites don’t take full advantage of the power of a well-honed SEO campaign that has implemented both on-the-page and off-the-page SEO best practices. SEO is both an art and a science, and I view the science part as 90 percent of that balance, even though there is some debate on what true best practices include.

With that in mind, listed here are six common SEO best practices that are often overlooked. The techniques are usually quick and painless to implement and can have dramatic effects on SEO results.

Shah Rukh Khan will undergo surgery on his right shoulder in a couple of days. The actor has a tear in his supraspintus ligament, which restricts his hand movements. What exactly ails the Badshah of Bollywood?

We spoke to Mumbai orthopaedic surgeon Dr Nicholas Antao, president of the Bombay Orthopaedic Society, to find out what’s wrong with SRK and this is what he told us.

What is a Supraspintus ligament tear?

A shoulder has four types of tendons and muscles that help it rotate. Supraspintus is one of these muscles, and it helps the arm to move upwards and outwards. If there is a shoulder injury post-40 (SRK is 43), the blood supply to these muscles reduces. That results in lesser nutrients to that particular muscle, making it weaker and weaker.

If you have a supraspintus injury, it can be treated with medicine and physiotherapy. But if you use your arm a lot — like in the case of athletes and dancers — the injury can become severe. In such circumstances, if you fall on your shoulder or there is a sudden jerk, the tendon tears completely.

Surgery is not always required but it is recommended if the person’s career is hampered.

Types of surgery:

There are two types of surgeries to treat this — the first is called a key hole surgery, also known as arthroscopic surgery. This is done through a incision; the repair is treated by the doctor through a camera.

The second is a minor open surgery in which a doctor cuts the shoulder and corrects the torn tendon. The doctor may also put an anchor made of metal or plastic so that the patient can move his arm well. The surgery takes an hour.

Recovery period:

The patient needs to be hospitalised for two days, and can go to work within seven days, provided he does not use that hand.

A minimum of three weeks of rest should be given to the affected shoulder after which rehabilitation work starts — that is six weeks of physiotherapy. After three months, a patient can use his hand again. But in the case of an athlete, it should be used after six months.

Hits:
The term hit is probably one of the most misused terms when it comes to describing website traffic.

I’ve heard many times, something like, “My site got over 1000 hits today!”.

Well, if that person knew what a hit was, he would know that 1000 hits really isn’t impressive at all.
Simply put, a “hit” is a request for a single file from the web server. That’s it. It could be any file, including: html, txt, jpg, gif, pdf, js, etc.

For most websites, one page usually contains image, javascript, and css tags, which have a src url pointing to separate files. So when that 1 page is loaded, it could potentially result in over 100 hits or more. (or over 100 requests for other file resources)

If it were up to me, the word “hit” would be completely stricken from the web analytics/ measurement vocabulary. I would instead suggest that the word “request” be used instead.

Pageviews:
Page views are a lot easier to understand, because the 2 words “page” and “view” basically describe what it means.

A Pageview is total number of times any page is viewed. For example, if someone lands on page A, goes to page B, then back to page A, that counts as 3 pageviews because there were 3 page loads.

- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
Cookie Based Measurements
The following measurements are cookie based, and will vary depending on which analytics program you use.

Unique Page Views:
This is a term that I first heard from Google Analytics. It is based on a session or a single visit to a site. So unlike a normal pageview, a unique pageview only counts once per visit.

For example, if a person goes to page A, then to page B, then back to page A, that would count for 2 unique pageviews, because the person only looked at 2 pages.

Visit:
A visit is also known as a session, starts when a user enters a site, and ends when a user exits a site. A visit consists of one or more pageviews. If someone visits a site for 10 minutes, then leaves, but returns 2 hours later, that is usually counted as 2 visits. (note: 2 hours isn’t a standard, the minimum time between visits can vary depending on the analytics software)

Unique Visit:
A unique visit is like a regular visit, but each visitor is only counted once in any given time frame. So the example above would only count as 1 unique visit.

Of all the cookie based measurements, unique visits is definitely the potential to be least accurate. Though some programs use IP address as well a unique cookie in the users browser to identify them, there are still lots of scenarios where things can go wrong. Just to name a few:
- IP’s are rarely static
- visitors can switch browsers
- visitors can clear cookies
- visitors can have more than one computer accessing the web, like a school or library
- visitors use proxy switchers
